I don’t know about you, but to me this spider looks like an opera singer in costume!
It is a micrathena spider. They tend to build their webs right at face level and the ladies do all the work spinning that web! When the male is ready to mate, he will spin a “mating thread” into her web before mating with her. The female will kill the male after mating, according to “Common Spiders of Maryland”. They feed mostly on small flies, gnats, and mosquitoes. Spinned Micrathena’s are the most common micrathena spiders in Maryland.
I believe this is a Spined Micrathena Spiny-Bellied Orbweaver.
Know you know something about spiders you probably didn’t want to know! For me, it’s good to know…as a photographer and all that!!
