This, That or The Other Thing: coffee grounds

Oct 2, 2019

Who ever would have thoughts I’d be writing about coffee grounds? I had so many ideas swirling in my head for ideas for this post…but this is pretty much ready to go, so here it is!

But they’re an important part of my life – not only for me, but also for my plants.

But not just any plants…acid loving plants, to be specific. I put them on my azaleas and holly trees, around the base, to be specific. I keep forgetting to put them on my hydrangeas and have thought about putting them on my blueberries. Just haven’t done it yet.

There was a time when I just threw the spent coffee grounds in the trash. Then I learned you can put coffee grounds on certain plants. So, they get put in a cup – along with the filters, they are biodegradable, so they won’t hurt anything. Every couple of days, I take the cups and dump them on the plants. I have enough plants that I make a rotation. It takes me about two weeks to finish the rotation.

So anyways… plants that love the acid from spent coffee grounds are: azaleas, hydrangeas, rhododendrons, lily of the valley, blueberries, carrots, and radishes. Any thing that loves acidic soil, will love your coffee too!

There are certain precautions you have to be aware of before starting to put coffee grounds in your garden. Like pets, dogs to be specific. It can make them extremely sick! Tomato plants don’t like coffee either.

So, there you have it…what to do with spent coffee grounds (in the article I have linked it also talks about using fresh coffee grounds and composting with coffee grounds).

Hope you enjoyed and maybe learned something new!!
