A Good Spot

Assateague Island, MD/VA, USA – Sept 10, 2010

What an experience!! First, our trip was delayed because of Hurricane Bob (there must be something about us and hurricanes named Bob. But that’s another story!), then after we get set up (tent camping) the mosquitoes about drove us out (we asked about moving but were told that the campground was full – so we spent as much time as we could on the beach), then the ponies decided our spot on the beach was actually their spot.

I know the beach is actually theirs, but still…couldn’t they find somewhere else to hang out?

Normally, I wouldn’t have been too concerned, but as you will see momentarily, there were at least three other herras (groups). Could’ve been trouble! As you can tell, they actually got pretty close before we decided to get up.

You can’t tell it in the photos, but they drew quite a crowd to our little spot on the beach. We were standing there, making small talk with a couple of women when one of them made a comment about feeling sorry for whoever these people were that had been kicked out of their spot!

“Um…that’s us!!” We laughed! I thought for sure they were going to lay down, but they didn’t. BUT, that brown one that’s closest to the umbrella? She did nibble on the umbrella…she decided it didn’t taste good. Which was a good thing…

We sat under the umbrella for about an hour before we decided it was time to move, then about another hour before they decided to move on. (You can see three groups of horses in the photo above and I believe, behind us, are another group or two.)

Definitely an experience I will never forget.

So, that’s the story of how we got kicked out of our spot on the beach by a few ponies. I’m just glad that everything turned out ok and no one – including the ponies – got hurt! Could’ve been a totally different experience!
