Spring Chicken

In colder American climates, chicken farmers would sell most of their chickens in the spring. Birds born at that time (or just before) were more valuable than older birds that had survived the winter. Some farmers would try to sell the old birds for the same price as the younger ones. Buyers with a shrewd eye would know not to buy a bird that was ‘no spring chicken’. The term came to represent anything or anyone past their prime.
