Katydid facts:

  • Alternative Titles: Tettigoniidae, bush cricket, bushcricket, long-horned grasshopper
  • nocturnal
  • produces the repetitive song for which katydids are named; the song is phoneticized as “katy-did, katy-didn’t.”
  • Songs differ as to their purpose, being either reproductive, territorial, aggressive, or defensive in nature.

Thou art a female, Katydid!

Beetle facts:

  • There are 12,000 different kinds of beetles in the United States and over 300,000 species in the world.
  • Beetles are found on land and in fresh water and can adapt to almost any environment
  • Beetles can both hurt and help the environment. Some beetle species destroy crops or property, while some species help get rid of garbage, eat dead trees or help pollinate flowers.
  • Adult beetles have two sets of wings.
  • Beetles cannot see very well, so they communicate using pheromones, sounds or vibrations.

Lady bug facts:

  • Several cultures even think of ladybugs as good luck charms for anything from marriage to childbirth to the weather to a good harvest
  • There are about 5,000 different species of ladybugs
  • Farmers have been known to bring in ladybugs to help control the pests on their plants naturally.
  • when they lay their eggs, they lay them smack dab in the middle of a field where there are pests. And it’s not just one or a dozen eggs they lay either – it’s hundreds!
  • To ward off predators, they secrete a foul-tasting fluid from the joints in their legs

Grasshopper facts:

  • there are over 11,000 species of grasshopper
  • A lot of people around the world eat grasshoppers
  • They can leap 20 times as far as their body length.
  • They have adapted to most every habitat including deserts, forests, and grasslands.
