Thought I’d share some benefits of coconut oil today. I just used it on my hair and in my mouth (not the same oil!), so now is as good a time as any.

There are many benefits of using coconut oil, for personal use as well as for cooking. Here are four…

  • healthy, shiny hair: once a month or so, when you are getting ready to wash your hair, rub coconut oil in before washng. Leave it in for about an hour, depending on how damaged your hair is and rinse with hot water (as hot as you can stand it). Then wash and/or condition it like you normally would. Be careful…we all now how slippery oil can be, and in the tub? Just make sure to clean the tub well after rinsing your hair out!
  • oral hygiene: take a spoonful and swish it around your mouth for as long as you can stand it (15-20 minutes is suggested). This will help pull plaque and stuff from your teeth, also helps prevent tooth decay and gum disease. You can also brush with coconut oil. If you don’t like fluoride, this is a good alternative.
  • skin care: Coconut oil can be used to keep skin soft. It is naturally anti-bacterial and anti-fungal. It has a natural SPF of 4-5. You can add other ingredients to it to boost the SPF. I add cocoa powder. (Eating dark chocolate can also help, but it has to be dark chocolate. There are other foods, but that is for another post.) You can also add the following: almond oil (SPF around 5), red raspberry seed oil (SPF 25-50), carrot seed oil (SPF 35-40). (I naturally tend to tan rather than burn, it comes from the Native American blood I have running through my veins. So, as long as I’m not in the sun ALL Day, I tend not to worry about it.) It can rinse off more easily than store bought sunscreens, so the need to reapply more often is a factor.)
  • can raise the good HDL cholesterol in your blood: is high in healthy saturated fats which can boost fat burning and boost energy. Cooking with olive oil as beneficial as well, but this post is about Coconut oil, so…

Here are some times NOT to use coconut oil:

  • as a lube with condoms (it can break down the latex, therefore making it less effective
  • cooking with high heat: has a smoke point of about 350 degrees Fahrenheit
  • can clog pores, so be careful
  • if you have sensitive skin…again, test it out!
  • if you have coarse hair: it has an astringent quality
