Culler Lake

I know I normally would’ve posted something after my Picture of the week, but my son and I went down to Culler Lake in Baker Park. We were only there for a short while, walked around the lake, took a bunch of pictures, then came back home. It was only about 38 degrees out, so it was a quick trip.

Here’s a few of the pictures I took with my cell phone…there’s plenty more, as I took more with my Canon I will be showing to you at a later date.

• Culler Lake is stocked with over 40,000 fish – largemouth bass, golden shiners, redear sunfish, and bluegills.
• Baker Park has been around or in concept since 1916
• there used to be a boating ramp (on Carroll Creek near South Bentz Street, remnants of it are still visible), bath house and swimming pool (still there, although it has been renovated throughout the years, I took swimming lessons there).

• in 1927, the park is dedicated in honor of Joseph Baker, who contributed over $13,000 to buy the land
• in 1928, the Bentz Street Bridge is built and the swinging bridge is relocated
• in 1938, Baker Park is expanded by 6 acres, which is where Kidwiler Pond (Culler Lake)

• in 1940, Kidwiler Pond is renamed Culler Lake, in Honor of Lloyd Culler

• in 1941, following Joseph Baker’s death in 1938, funds are raised to build a bell tower in his memory. Frederick dedicates the Joseph D. Baker Bell Tower and Carillon in November.

• in 1964, Asa Watkins donates additional land to Frederick for use as park, enabling the park to extend west of Culler Lake. A little league baseball field is installed on this site.

I will be taking photos of these building in the very near future…

• 1977 and 1986: Evelyn Krantz – whose family owns the house now called Schifferstadt – donates land along Carroll Creek west of the little league field, extending Baker Park to Route 15. (Schifferstadt is now a museum, there will be free museum tours going on Dec 14, noon-6pm)
• in 1990, the original band shell (date unknown) is demolished and an entirely new structure built.
• in 1991: Friends of Baker Park is founded by Victoria Seward
• Culler Lake was drained, cleaned and refilled and reopened in 2016. It took about 2 years to see the project through, from beginning to end

On the way home, I decided to take a little detour and try that little (gravity hill) experiment on Cherry Lane. But there was too much traffic, so it will have to wait until another day!

There is a legend, that if you put your car in neutral at the lowest point on Cherry Lane, your car will go up the hill by itself. To read about that (and other legends), click here.
