fun with words

hope you enjoy!
ten gallon hats: a large broad-brimmed hat, with a high rounded crown, traditionally worn by cowboys. It is best known as the defining piece of clothing for the North American cowboy.
No one really knows where the term came from, but according to thevintagenews.com, the term dates back to 1925. The most conventional explanation being that the hat holds “ten gallons of water”, but this isn’t true. The thinking is that the word “gallon” actually comes from the Spanish word “galón” which means “braid”, so a ten gallon hat is actually any hat that has braiding around the brim.

There’s an old saying related by Alan Watts… I think it’s a Tai Chi thing… “you cannot put the wind in a bag.”
Nice post. 👍
Thank you!
All those were interesting and fun to read. Didn’t know that about the cowboy hat.
haha – that last one about the worst numbers! Agree! 🙂
Glad you enjoyed! I new the 10 gallon hat didn’t hold 10 gallons, but didn’t know the origins. Thanks for stopping by!
