Reading: Dr. Seuss (2)

March 22, 2021

This is the second part of 3 posts that I did on Dr. Seuss back in 2019. After part 3 is republished, I will do an over view and try to include some of the controversy behind Dr Seuss. I think you can see why Dr. Seuss might be controversial, not that I agree, but as with anything – a person needs to keep such things in context.

Hope you enjoy!

The Beginning

All of the info and images in this post come from the book “Dr. Seuss Goes To War” by Richard H. Minear. The photos are mine, but the images are Dr. Seuss’.

There is so much information in this book, I could probably keep going until the end of the year. But, I’m not going to. I got the book from the library, so when it’s due is when I will stop and move on…at least for the time being!

This will be a quick and easy read, hope you enjoy and maybe learn something you didn’t know about Dr. Seuss.

  • Dr. Seuss was third generation American. Both sets of grandparents came from Germany. His fathers parents came to America before 1870 and established a brewery in Springfield. The brewery flourished until prohibition in the 1920’s. The brewery was named “Kalmbach and Geisel” but became known as “Comeback and Guzzle”. German was the language in the household.

What are we going to do about it?

  • During WWI, Dr. Seuss sold US war bonds. He was a boy scout at the time.
  • While Dr Seuss was in college, a run in with (college) authorities over bootlegging liquor, caused Dr. Seuss to publish under an alias. He chose his middle name. Dr came later.
  • He never did earn a Ph.D., but when he became successful, his alma mater conferred on him an honorary doctorate.

  • From 1927-1941, Dr. Seuss lived in NYC and drew humor cartoons for Judge, an obscure humor magazine, and occasionally for more prestigious journals such as Saturday Evening Post.
  • By 1941, Dr. Seuss had a steady income from ESSO and the beginnings of a career as an author of unconventional children’s books. The Cat In The Hat was his first breakthrough book, published in 1957. (He had other books published before that, but they didn’t do too well.)
