Common garter snake

May 14, 2021

I transplanted three holly tree’s today. Was only going to move two, but figured I’d go ahead with three.

I still haven’t figured out what to put in the planters. So for now, they sit empty.

I have to put markers out so my boyfriend doesn’t mow them down. I still need to mark the smallest one, but I mowed that area when I was done transplanting…so I’m not too worried about it at the moment. When I water them in the morning I’ll take a marker with me.

Even with markers, he’s mowed down some of my trees and shrubs.

I had just about finished mowing when I came across this beauty…

Not to worry…it’s just a garter snake. Although I had to get my snake book to make sure.

He let me get kinda close…once we both figured out we weren’t a threat to each other.

Of course, I’m not really all that close. It just seems that way. Of course, never get that close to a snake. It will strike, in self defense, if it feels threatened.

My dad was bitten for the first time ever by a black snake that had gotten in the house a few years ago. He was legally blind, 74 years old, and didn’t know what had happened. He said it felt like he had brushed up against a briar or something.

He asked me to take a look at his leg, see if there were any bite marks on his leg. There was blood, and two U shaped marks on his calf, facing each other. And of course, I’m looking for fang marks…until I looked up what black snake bites look like. Yeah, he’d been bitten by a black snake. Kept it clean, went on about our lives til about ten days later, give or take, we found it in the bay window. Took us a few hours, but we got it out of the house. It was about 8 feet long, and I wouldn’t let my dad kill it.

Anyway…

I’ve actually got quite a bit of watering to do now, but that’s okay. After about a month, they will take care of themselves and in return – take care of me. And in that I mean, less mowing and even more privacy. Who doesn’t want more privacy? Especially with everything going on in the world today.

I’m glad I was the one mowing, and not my boyfriend. Otherwise, we’d probably have a dead snake.

hope you have a great day!

thanks for stopping by!!

    • I think it was/is. I agitated it at first, and a poked it with a stick so it would move and I could see it better. Never got that aggressive. It’s just a baby…I think it was as curious about me as I was it
