The meaning of the Twelve Days of Christmas isn’t as simple as people may think it to be. During the 12th century, Christians weren’t allowed to worship the way we are today. The 12 Days of Christmas is one such song that came about at the time. This is my understanding, anyway.
2 Turtle Doves
~ the doves represent the Old and New Testaments
3 French Hens
~ represents theological virtues: faith, hope and charity
While researching this on the web, many sites will tell you it was the Catholics that weren’t allowed to worship openly. This contradicts with what I am reading right now (The Great Controversy) and what I have read, studied and learned throughout the years. I think of Robin Hood, to put it simply. While there were other religions, the Catholic church was the predominate one. The Catholic Church controlled the government for a long period of time. The Catholic church did not want other religions threatening the way they believed, having incorporated paganistic rituals into their worship. I say Roman Catholic, because that’s what we know it as today. The Great Controversy calls it Romanism. They didn’t want the Bible reproduced or translated. If the people gained the knowledge that God had given in the Bible, they – the pope’s and the higher ups – knew they would have a problem. The people were repressed, but some did find a way, facing torment, jail time, exile, and persecution. Bibles were burned.
As I process more, and delve deeper into this, I will be sure to share…to the best of my understanding.
hope you have a great day!
