The meaning of Memorial Day

Memorial Day is a US holiday, formally known as Decoration Day, that is celebrated on the last day in May, a day set aside to remember to honor those who have died in US wars. It originated when citizens would place flowers on graves of those who had been killed during the US Civil War (1861-1865). Many places claim to be the birth place of Memorial Day celebrations. In 1966, by Congressional proclamation, Waterloo, New York was claimed to be the birthplace. In 1868, John A. Logan, the commander in chief of the Grand Army of the Republic, an organization of Union vets, promoted a national holiday on May 30, stating “the purpose of strewing with flowers or otherwise decorating the graves of comrades who died in defense of their country during the late rebellion.” After WW1, as the day came to be observed in honor of those who died in all US wars, the name changed from Decoration Day to Memorial Day. Memorial Day has been observed on the last Monday in May since 1971. A wreath is laid at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier on Memorial Day, as well as parades, religious services, and speeches nationwide.
