The longest day of the year

(facebook)

It’s been a very interesting day today!

When I woke up, it was overcast and figured I would transplant a holly tree…after I got awake and a cup or two of coffee in me. When I was ready to dig up the baby holly and transplant it, it started to rain! Normally, a little rain wouldn’t stop me, but it was raining a little too hard for me to transplant. So I started a load of laundry…and…it stopped raining. Go figure, right?!?! So, I dug up the baby holly and transplanted it…even though I had a load of laundry in.

Typically, it’s starting to get a little late in the year to transplant trees and shrubs…but the weather’s been a little unusual, so I decided to go ahead and take the chance. As long as the roots are settling and it gets watered on a regular basis, it should be okay.

This photo was taken before the transplant and I haven’t taken a post transplant photo yet. Watering the trees is going to be interesting for the next couple of weeks…

When trees and shrubs are transplanted, you need to get into a routine of watering. If you can keep up with it, they should survive.

  • for the first two weeks, water twice a day
  • the next two weeks, water once a day
  • the next two weeks, every other day
  • at this point you can scale back to every other week for a month. The point of watering like this for the first six weeks is to get the roots established.
  • after watering every other week for a month, you can scale back even more to once a month. Water for once a month until you reach the one-year anniversary of the transplant.
  • each tree or shrub should get a minimum of a half gallon of water, depending on its size, and should be watered regardless. If it’s pouring down rain, you can hold off until it stops, but it should still be watered.

I’ve only had two or three holly’s die on me, and they died because I didn’t keep up with the watering. So, it was my fault.

The reason I say it’s going to be interesting over the next few weeks is because the first two holly’s are at the point where I water them every other day, which just started this week. But I need to water this transplant every day for the next two weeks. Oh, and I need to carry water to where I transplanted them…

I’ll be sharing actual transplant photos soon…

Keep calm
and plant something

By now, everyone has heard of Biden’s fall…right? On Father’s Day he was riding his bike, stopped for a photo op and lost his balance, while standing still, and straddling his bike. I wanted to share the meme’s I have seen so far…
