what a difference a year makes

The first two images above are from last year (2021), the last two are from this year (2022). I can’t believe how much it’s changed! I didn’t plant anything, just let whatever grow, grow. There are some plants I need to get rid of, but for the most part I will leave it alone. The birds and other critters love it.

I said I was going to get the pathway to the deck finished this year.

I’ve probably still got a little work to do, but I need it to rain – a good hard rain, so I can see exactly what I need to do. But for the most part what I’ve done does what I want it to do. I would like to put something across the top, to keep grass from growing back, but at this point I can’t really think of anything. There is so much gravel, which makes it hard to dig. I’m thinking that I will just have to spray it with non-toxic weed killer. The recipe is 1 cup of dish soap, 1 cup of vinegar and 1 gallon of water. My thought is using a sprayer – which I have and spray the whole area down. It’s been a while since I used it and I can’t remember how much it holds. I think it’s two or three gallons, so I’d just make sure to use the right proportions.

I even scraped/power washed stuff off the bricks. I still need to scrape/power wash a little more, but it’s okay for now. It looks so much better than it did.

During the winter, I’m thinking of putting something across the top so I can put reflectors and mark where the pathway starts. My creative brain will think of something. I’ll also put an old piece of carpet down on the actual pathway. When my neighbor plows, he won’t be tearing up my walkway, and when we shovel, we won’t be throwing rock everywhere.

I will be doing another post that shows the whole process of working on this path from beginning to end. I started working on this way back in 2014 or 2015, putting the brick down because that area got so muddy from the hose. Then I worked on the area in front of the steps. Then it progressed from there.

I knew when I started way back when I wanted this area transformed, I just didn’t plan on it taking me this long. Life and other things got in the way… But…7 or 8 years later, here I am. One happy girl. Mission accomplished!
