Old clocks

my thoughts for today

I recently brought this old clock up from the basement and hung it on the wall. Chances are at this point, it will just be a “conversation piece”, as I’m not sure that it works, I haven’t tried to wind it up. I do remember it hanging on the wall in my childhood home, and I believe it worked.

I have a key that probably would do the trick, I just haven’t tried it yet.

I have another clock that requires a key to get it going and I have wound it up. It spins and dings like crazy for a few minutes before it stops. I’m afraid, if the key fits, it’ll do the same thing. I’ve tried to work with it but to no avail. So, I leave well enough alone. For now, anyway.

I don’t know what my fascination with clocks comes from, especially old ones. Maybe it’s just nostalgia, I don’t know. Most of the clocks in the photos are heirlooms, or something like that.

This clock actually works and keeps pretty good time – as long as I keep up with winding it twice a day. It is a twelve-hour clock and is around a hundred years old.

Twelve-hour clocks need to be wound up twice a day. There are also 24 hour and 6-hour clocks. 24 hour clocks get wound once a day and 6 hour clocks get wound 4 times a day. I don’t think 6 hour clocks were all that popular.

My dad told me this clock came out of an old Ford. I’m sure at one point it worked, I just don’t feel like taking it apart to try and get it going. I can adjust the hands easily enough, but the box needs to come apart. And I have a feeling I wouldn’t be able to get it back together again. So, I leave it alone.

I have no idea how old this clock is. It was in with my grandfather’s stuff. I think the smaller circle under the 12 is for the second hand, but don’t quote me on that. The clock is also featured in the painting set behind it. It is a watercolor painting I did when going to the local community college.

This clock I bought when we were in the Adirondack Mountains (NY) camping many years ago, the hands got bent on transit home. I’ve tried to straighten them out, but so far, I can’t get them straight enough.

Even though it’s hard to clean, I can’t get rid of it.

This is the one I mentioned earlier that goes crazy when I wind it up.

I also have two cuckoo clocks packed away, that I would like to put on display. I think there’s two… If for no other reason, just for display. I doubt I’d try to get them going, might drive someone crazy.

I think I just like old things. There’s something about the stuff, that you can’t find today.

As time goes on, you’ll understand. What lasts, lasts; what doesn’t, doesn’t. Time solves most things. And what time can’t solve, you have to solve yourself.

  1. I sure enjoyed seeing your collection of clocks, especially the one you say goes crazy. I’ve always liked old clocks and watches, too. 🙂

    • Thank you! I’ve got a collection of old watches in a box somewhere. Old Keyes too. Maybe I’ll get them on display at some point.
      Thanks again ☺️
