The Ryugyong Hotel, also known as the Hotel of Doom is the world’s largest abandoned building. Construction began in 1987 under Kim Il-sung’s direction. Standing at 1,080 feet tall, the hotel was to have 105 floors and 3,000 rooms, topped with a 14-floor cone at its pinnacle. The cone was supposed to revolve, and contain restaurants, shops, and ballrooms. In 2003, construction was halted.

The shell of the building was completed on schedule. It was built in the exact shape and size of George Orwell’s ‘Ministry of Truth’ propaganda building in the novel, 1984. In the novel, the ministry serves as a propaganda machine and was responsible for falsifying historical events. Whether the shape and design of the building mimicking Orwell’s propaganda building was done on purpose, no one knows.

“War is Peace
Freedom is slavery
Ignorance is strength”

…may not be the exact same, but pretty close

At first, the Soviet Union backed the construction of the hotel, but when the USSR collapsed, so did funding for the construction of the building.

In 2008, construction started again, with an announcement of a 2012 opening date. The date was pushed to 2013, then only a partial opening, then once again cancelled altogether. Two companies that supposedly made a deal to finish the construction pulled out.

In 2017, signs of work started to appear. But still no opening date…it’s still dubbed the tallest unoccupied building and the 63rd tallest building overall.

  • For now, one side of the 1,080-foot building has been outfitted with LED screens used for propaganda light shows.
  • Each of the building’s three sections, which join together at the top, are 328 feet (100 meters) long, according to Atlas Obscura.
  • It would cost an estimated $2 billion to finally finish the Ryugyong Hotel, according to Reuters.
