Loretta Lynn passed away today, peacefully in her sleep. She was 90.

I had a different song planned for today, but considering the occasion I thought I’d pay tribute to her.

Loretta Lynn was an American singer/songwriter. Her career spanned 6 decades in country music. She was born April 14, 1932 in Butcher Hollow, Kentucky.

~ She is related to Patty Loveless, Crystal Gale is her younger sister

~ she married Oliver Lynn at the age of 15, four of their children were born by the time she was twenty

~ Oliver’s nicknames were Doolittle, and Mooney because he used to manage moonshine in Kentucky

~ from 1977 through 1989, she was the popular spokesperson for Crisco Products from Procter and Gamble

~ she and her younger sister Crystal Gayle are the only siblings to each make guest appearances on The Muppet Show (1976)

~ she came under fire in May 2012 when her birth certificate was unearthed by the media, revealing that Lynn had been lying about her age for decades. She was actually almost 16 at the time of her marriage, not 13 as she told the world. The discrepancy is significant because it completely alters the narrative Lynn has spun in books and public references. In reality, it would have been illegal for a girl under the age of 15 to marry in Kentucky.
