digging the frog pond

photo(s) of the week

Obviously, it’s not completed…but it’s good enough that on Wednesday I was able to transfer the tadpoles from the aquarium on the deck to the pond.

It’s not very big, but it’s big enough to do what I need it to do.

Update:

I moved the tadpoles to the pond Thursday morning. I could’ve done it Wednesday, but I didn’t really feel like it. It was a little bit of a chore and took some time, as I had to scoop some of the water, rocks, and tadpoles out before I could take the aquarium to the pond. Once I had gotten most of the water and tadpoles transferred, I carried the aquarium down, let the water and remaining tadpoles settle for a few minutes, then transferred the rest.

All in all, it took me about an hour to do. Maybe more.

Now, the tadpoles seem to have settled and I hope they are happier there.

Just two crops of a couple of the tadpoles (above)…there’s quite a few more, swimming all over.

I have brought more stone and gravel up and plan on working on the pond area throughout the rest of the fall…however long it takes (is this kind of work ever done?). I plan on transplanting two Crepe Myrtles, hostas and some other flowers and planting them around the edge of the pond. I also think I need to add a small berm around part of the pond, just to keep any flooding from filling the pond with silt and who knows what else. Where I put the pond just happens to be an area where water runs through when we get any major rains.

hope you have a great day!
thanks for stopping by!!

    • Tadpoles eat mosquito larvae from what I’ve read. We already have dragonflies, frogs, toads and birds that eat them, so hopefully the mosquitoes will be kept to a minimum.

      • Yeah, I understand tadpoles do… as well. Apparently, mine don’t have the stomach, I see soooo many larvae, and the tadpoles just swim around them.

      • Maybe the tadpoles aren’t big enough? Or there’s too many larvae? We had a bunch of larvae swimming in the aquarium, but after a while, not so much.
