finding calm in the chaos

January 5, 2020

~ this is a rather long read, for me, just to forewarn you; at this point it’s 972 words, but I think it’s a pretty easy read…

My thoughts for today

I was going to take the time and show you some of the first photos I took this year, but, as I knew would probably happen, I got to working on one photo and that was the end of the story. I only allowed myself an hour to work… The one below, turned into a project in and of itself. I knew when I took the photo, I could play with it, but I didn’t think it would turn out the way it did. Not really…

The original photo was taken January 1, 2021, with my LG cell phone camera. We had an ice storm, and of course, I had to go out and take photos.

Looking at the original photo above, I see what looks like could be the sun peeking out from behind dark clouds, or maybe an opening into another galaxy…what do you see?

Anyway, it’s no surprise that while playing with this photo, I came up with the images I did…

pathway into the chaos

you must have chaos within you to give birth to a dancing star

a dancing star

All of the photos will eventually be available somewhere…when this happens, I will let you know. If you follow me on twitter, they automatically show up there. There may be more, as I’ve got 5 more variations of the “birth” photos to work on. The photo directly above is a “transformation” or crop of the “chaos” photo that I had put through the polar coordinates filter in PhotoShop.

finding calm in the chaos

I know I said I was going to do an over view of the last year, and I haven’t forgotten. I’m trying ever so hard to keep in the present, so looking back at the past isn’t conducive for me at the moment. There have been some really trying times in the past year, I know I’m not the only one.

So, instead I’m going to provide links to some of my most popular posts from the last year…

I’m not sure exactly what the future holds for Holly’s World, but I do know that I’m not going anywhere. I do plan on continuing “fun with words”, Legends”, “picture of the day”, “picture of the week”, and “Sunday’s Inspiration”. May not be on a set schedule, but I will do my best to make sure “fun with words” and “legends” happens every week. I’ve been thinking about sharing more of my personal story (cancer, raising a son as a single parent, for example)…it could be a bit painful, as I have tucked some of that back into the shadows. But at the same time, everything I have gone through has brought me to this place and time. So maybe what I’ll do is pull a certain photo and just talk. Might be the best thing… or way, instead of planning everything out.

“Each moment of the year has its own beauty…
a picture which was never before and shall never be seen again.”

~ Ralph Waldo Emerson

I do plan on getting out more over the next year…not shopping or anything like that. I’m done sitting at home and letting the government tell me when and where I can go. Even here where I live, they’re trying to tell us to wear a mask all the time, indoors and out, whether or not you’re alone or with a group of people. I, personally, just don’t get that. Wearing a mask 24 hours a day, 7 days a week isn’t good for you – unless you’re wearing a special mask, it can do more harm than good. But I’m not getting into all that, not right now. You need to do what’s best for you and your family.
I also plan on having yard sales, with the proper precautions, getting rid of some of the junk that’s been piling up (real junk like old mattresses and box springs, broken tv’s, and other junk that is no good), and fixing the place up as I can. I’m sure there will be stories…

My poor baby, passed away June 25, 2020

I plan on getting out, going hiking, road trips, fishing – whatever I can, as long as the weather permits. I did manage a little bit last year, but not as much as I had hoped.

What the Fact?

January 5, 1825: Alexander Dumas, the French author known for his sword dueling epics The Man In The Iron Mask and The Three Musketeers was no great duelist himself. On this day, the 22 year old won his first and only sword fight because his opponent tripped over a tree root and fell backwards into the snow, causing him to surrender. Dumas was unhurt, but left the fight with a deep psychological scar: His belt buckle broke during the fight, causing his pants to fall down.

black caterpillar

January 3, 2021

This is a rarity – for me – two on a Sunday!
But I just had to share!

I found this little guy – or gal – yesterday, Saturday, January 2, 2021 – while out splitting wood with my boyfriend. Actually, we had finished up and were covering the wood back up because it’s raining today.

You know the meaning of black woolly bears, right? The saying goes that the bigger the black stripe on the caterpillar the harsher the winter is going to be…but what about an all black caterpillar?
I looked it up… they’re are different “types” of woolly bear caterpillars, the one above is a Giant Leopard Caterpillar, the one below is the woolly bear or banded caterpillar. The caterpillar above doesn’t predict winter conditions!

Woolly Bear Caterpillars…

  • also known as Woolly bears, woolly worm, and fuzzy worm
  • Isabella tiger moth/Pyrrharctia isabella (scientific name)
Woolly Bear Caterpillar (Pyrrharctia isabella)
(not my image)
  • also known as the banded woolly bear
  • there are at least eight species or types of woolly bears
Isabella Tiger Moth
(not my image)
Isabella Tiger Moth
  • lives in the United States and southern Canada
  • formally named by James Edward Smith in 1797
  • adult moth only lives one or two weeks (wikipedia)
  • often has black segments on either end, and rust colored in the middle
  • all black woolly caterpillars aren’t actually the woolly bears that predict the weather, it’s a different species
  • if the rusty band is wide, it will be a mild winter; the more black there is, the harsher the winter

So, the caterpillar I found isn’t the woolly bear that predicts winter weather, it could have fooled me! It is actually a Giant Leopard caterpillar…

Full-grown giant woolly bear, (Hypercompe scribonia (Stoll 1790)
(not my image)
  • a different species or type of woolly bears
(my image)
  • adult male moths can reach about 51 mm (2 in) in length, while the adult female grows up to 30 mm (1.2 in)

great leopard moth
  • both caterpillars will over winter, completing their development in the spring
  • caterpillars are the larvae of the moths and butterflies
  • one or two broods each year (lay eggs) depending on where they happen to live

Some sites that I looked at say that the Giant Leopard Caterpillar is the weather predictor, this just isn’t true. The banded one is the weather predictor… the black caterpillar I found yesterday stays like that all year.

Like I mentioned earlier, the black bands of the banded woolly bear, predict the winter weather…the more rust color their is, the milder the winter. The lengths of the bands can also predict the type of winter:

  • equal black on either end = the start and finish of the season will be rough, the middle not so bad
  • longer or wider band in the front = harsher start to winter
  • longer band in the back = harsher end to winter
  • if there isn’t much rust color = harsher than normal most of the way through
  • the lengths of the black bands on the woolly/banded caterpillar actually depends on the amount of moisture it receives

Although the caterpillar I found looks like a woolly bear, and technically it is, it’s not the one we look to for winter weather conditions. After taking two photos of my new little friend, I stuck him back out in the garden and covered him with some leaves. I’m sure he’ll find a good place to over winter. Maybe I’ll find his cocoon sometime!

working on replacing the kitchen faucet…we either need to get an adapter to connect the different size plumbing or return what we bought and go a different route, which is what my dad did a number of years ago. When my dad replaced it, he just bought the faucet and sprayer and connected it directly to the existing plumbing. We tried to install the faucet yesterday while it was raining, but it doesn’t fit. Plan on getting replacement parts/exchange today, depending on what we find.
