A Lumberjack Tale

September 29, 2021

Don’t worry
I hugged it first

The other day, Joe Biden claimed to have been offered a job as a lumberjack during the Vietnam war, so I thought I’d share a Lumberjack tall tale, superstition and other stuff possibly. Hope you enjoy!

The Gorby (An American Tale)

“It happened on the Tobique River in northern New Brunswick. The bird was called a gorby[a Canada Jay]. An old woodsman wouldn’t hurt one. Sometimes others would play tricks on them by tossing out a piece of hot bun toasted over the fire and the first bird that got it got a hot beak and then would fly up in the tree and scold, and it sounded as if it were saying “Jesus, Jesus.” One man, thinking he was doing something smart, held one and picked all its feathers except its wing feathers and tail feathers and tossed it into the air and said “Now go to your Jesus bare-assed.” The others predicted something drastic would happen to him, and the next morning when he lifted up his head all his hair stayed on his pillow. He left the crew soon after.” (From the book American Folklore and Legend by Reader’s Digest)

“The tallest oak in the forest is the tallest
not just because it grew from the hardiest acorn;
it is the tallest also because no other trees blocked its sunlight,
the soil around it was deep and rich,
no rabbit chewed through its bark as a sapling,
and no lumberjack cut it down before it matured.”

~ Malcolm Gladwell

Skillful Pastimes (superstitions)

“A visitor to an early-20th-century camp described the lumberjacks sitting around the box stove in their barrack-like shanty enjoying a “free-for-all” – playing checkers, poker or cooncan, reading, writing letters, and conversing. He discovered from the talk that a good woodsman was proud of his prowess. He kept his axe sharp enough to shave with and felled his timber with such precision that it would drive a tent pin into the ground. He was good on a river too. He could roll a log with his feet, ride it through the rapids, and cleave log jams.
Less skilled choppers often caused accidents. Sideswiping branches (called widder-makers) from an ill-felled tree too often injured crewmen; it was an axiom of the industry that the woods took a Swede a day. The most terrifying accident of all was getting rolled into the boiling maelstrom of river and racing logs when a logjam was broken. Only sharp reflexes and instant decisions kept a man from death. Such a decision earned Cruel Jimmy Holmes his name. Seeing a friend caught in a logjam, he chopped his leg off and saved his life. Many logging tales grew out of incidents like that. They told of headless men, mangled bodies, and crushed skulls being fished up – and of others not found, whose ghosts were to haunt the river where they had disappeared for long after.” (From the book American Folklore and Legend by Reader’s Digest)

my thoughts for today

better at a snails pace, than not at all, I guess
~ all photos taken between September 23-27 ~

some kind of wild flower
might be fake hemlock, but not sure

So, as many of you know I did my back in last weekend, weeding my flower garden. Which really put a damper on doing much of anything all week long. On Friday, I started feeling almost my old self again, then on Saturday I woke up with chest congestion. I started taking medicine, using my nebulizer, upping Vitamin C intake, but by that night, I knew I needed to get started on Mucinex ASAP! And, in my brain, I’m wondering how I was going to manage that with all the Covid stuff going on. I said something to my boyfriend, he said he’d get it for me! Thank goodness!!

So, on Saturday my medicine looked like this:

  • Nyquil every 4 hours
  • Zyrtec twice a day for allergies
  • Flonase nasal spray, 2 puffs each nostril twice a day
  • albuterol/nebulizer every 4 hours
  • gargle with salt water
  • saline nasal spray often
  • hot bath with epsom salt

Yesterday, I switched out Nyquil for Mucinex DM Max (chest congestion) and added Vicks Vaporub. Because I caught the congestion early enough, today, I am taking Mucinex and the nebulizer breathing treatment every six hours instead of 4.

I’d rather not be doing any of this, but it is what it is and I’m able to take care of this at home. I might be moving slower than normal at the moment, but I am moving. Much better than I was last week.

Oh, I’m supposed to take the allergy medicine twice a day to help keep this kind of stuff at bay, but I slacked off there for a while. As soon as my boyfriend told me his mother was sick, I should’ve started taking my allergy medicine…knowing there was a pretty good chance he’d bring it home. Which he did…he took medicine for two days and was better. I can’t be so lucky!!

He’s bugging about getting out somewhere…that is, my boyfriend. I told him, not until this cold gets better. With covid and everything, I don’t want people freaking out! It’s just a cold, but people/the public may not think so. If you know anything about me, I have yet to be tested for covid, that’s not changing now. There’s no way they are sticking that thing up my nose, not while I’m conscious, anyway! (If you didn’t know, they are doing away with the PCR test here in the US by the end of the year, stating that the test can’t differentiate between covid, flu, cold, or any other bug!)
So, I’ll just stay home and rest and get better. I really don’t get why he thinks I need to get out and about anyway…going fishing or hiking is one thing. Going shopping and dealing with the public? Right now? With this cold? Sorry, I’d rather stay home, get better and do all that stuff later.

…just playing around, with the photo filters, a little…
Why not have a little fun, right?

Chances are I just got this cold from my boyfriend, and not from being around vaccinated people. Is it possible that being at the party did something? Sure. But again, I’m not speculating, as my boyfriend’s mother was sick – did I mention he had spent a week with her on the Eastern Shore for his son’s birthday? he did – and he brought it home. That’s all I really know for sure, at this point!

a white Rose of Sharon flower

For the next few days, I will be taking it easy, taking my meds and resting whenever possible! I’ll try to keep up with everything as normal, but no guarantees. My main thing right now, is to get better so I can do “normal” again. I have some posts up my sleeve, but they have been put on hold for the time being.

one of my roses is blooming!!
there are some weedy vines wrapped
up with the rose, which I plan on clipping back
once I mow the garden down

When I was walking around the house a little this morning, which I finally have the energy to do again, kind of, I noticed my red rose bush has one red bloom on it. YAY!!!! It’s not unusual for them to bloom again in the fall, but I hadn’t noticed this one doing so. So, I am happy!!

That was my weekend, and my day! Hope yours has been better!
I am grateful I am in a place where I can rest, and take care of myself
and not have to stress about “life”!

The Necessity of Wind, by What Ed Said

September 27, 2021

The Necessity of Wind by What Ed Said (his words, not mine)

*The Biosphere 2 project was created as a research tool for scientists to study the Earth’s living systems. From 1991 to 1993, 8 volunteers sealed themselves from the outside world in this Biosphere bubble. It is remembered as a failure. In the Biosphere 2, they had trees growing faster than they would in the wild. However, they found that these trees wouldn’t completely mature. Before they could, they used to collapse. Later it was found that this was caused by the lack of wind in the biosphere. The presence of wind makes a tree stronger, it is thus able to mature and not fall down due to its own weight.

Biosphere 2
An enclosed region
Tried to recreate
The Garden of Eden

Trees grew quick
But never matured
A failed experiment
That never endured

Weak trees enclosed
Leaves had thinned
Trees with no strength
Because they had no wind

Protected in a bubble
Brought an end not good
Beautiful but not strong
Developed no stress wood

We deal with contrary winds
Adversity that seems wrong
But don’t forget its purpose
Its purpose to make you strong

At Biosphere 2
In all their pursuits
They had beautiful trees
Yet with shallow roots

We go through valleys
We go through trials
Some can be long
And go on for miles

But roots are developed
When the wind blows
Through those blistering gusts
The weak tree grows

Making you stronger
Is God’s master plan
And in that wind
Is where strength began

*I am feeling better today…Saturday I woke up with chest congestion, now it’s mostly in my head. Later on today I’ll explain all the meds and what not, but the most important thing is…no pneumonia, no doctors and what not. Trying to get back to at least something that looks like normal!
