my thoughts for today
yard work

I know I’m late in posting today…I got busy working on the walkway to the deck. I’ve got more work to do, obviously, but I’m getting there. I worked for two hours today, but it honestly didn’t feel like two hours. And considering I slept til after 9 this morning, just pushed everything later.

I’m a little achy, but that’s ok! Being able to get outside and get something done feels oh so good. It’s been a month since I’ve been able to do anything! So, I am very happy!

Remember how the grass was all overgrown before? It’s all gone now!! The brown spots/dirt is going to be filled in, hopefully next week. I’ll have to get more rock though…my son and I went to Home Depot and got five bags. I honestly didn’t think it would take five bags to do what I did, but it is what it is! Two bags pretty much went in the area where the water dish/Kokopeli/dump truck are. Then I trenched out between what rock I had already put down and the grassy area and put the hose to it. I wanted to rinse some of the dirt away, but also see where the water ran to.

I had to put some rock down to make a hump of sorts, to keep water from running back in front of the steps. I know it’s hard to see, but the hump is pretty much where the sun is shining [on the rock], all the way back to the grass line. As I work more on it, I should be able to keep the water from pooling at the bottom of the steps. Or at least make it so as soon as it stops pouring down rain, it runs off and away – which it pretty much does now anyway.

Weekend photos:

I didn’t really do a whole lot over the weekend, besides rest. I was feeling pretty much 100 by Friday, but I didn’t want to over do it. I brought the rest of my shelf-sitting houseplants in because it got cool – 45 degrees cool, and one hanging plant. Throughout the week, I’ll be bringing the rest of my hanging plants in.

I took the moon and morning glory photos last night. I knew the morning glory wouldn’t be open because it was night time, but I like the way they turned out with the flash.

According to the wooly bear caterpillar we are going to have a harsh beginning to the winter. We shall see, wooly bear, we shall see! I captured a photo a few weeks ago of one that had hardly any black on it – but it may have really been too early to make any predictions with it. Or it may not have been a true wooly bear, I’m not sure.

Katydid

The bugs and critters are alive and happy, for the time being anyway, getting ready for winter, what it means for them…

Did she just lose dinner? Or did she just throw it away? I think it’s the later…

Sorry the video is short. I know it’s not the best, but it will have to do. I took one just before this, almost 45 seconds long but nothing happened. I stopped for a few seconds and could tell she was getting ready to pounce, so I started recording again. Glad I did! You might want to watch it a couple times…

The First Fire of the Season

We did light a fire last night. It was cool inside and out, and I didn’t want it to get too cool overnight. Especially since I’m finally over the head/chest cold I had. I put a log on it before I went to bed then just let it burn out. It was a damp, chilly weekend, and the sun hardly shone at all, so it was naturally kind of cool in here yesterday. It’s supposed to be in the seventies and no or little rain the rest of the week, so we should be good to go.

That was my weekend! How was yours? I hope it was good!

I was browsing on Pinterest one day and came across this…and thought it was pretty cool. Looks like it’s made from a cheap, collapsible strainer, bottle caps and small o-rings. A key ring, fishing line, beads and some kind of small metal thingamajig finish it off. If you’re artsy, I’m sure you can figure it out.

I just might try, once I finish my photo-slide lampshade. That I’ve been working on for forever!

The Magic of Christmas

October 17, 2021

*The following is a response by Ben Stein, to the White House administration in 2013 calling the Christmas Tree a “holiday tree”. It was then recited by him on CBS Sunday Morning Commentary. I think it applies as much today, as it did back then…maybe more so. With VP Harris suggesting to do any Christmas shopping now, because there may not be anything left later, I thought I’d share this. But first, I’ll leave you with this thought…maybe this Christmas should be more about making memories, enjoying family and friends, good food and just being happy! And maybe a few presents. I’m sure I will elaborate more on this, later, but for now…enjoy!

“My confession:
I am a Jew, and every single one of my ancestors was Jewish. And it does not bother me even a little bit when people call those beautiful lit up, bejewelled trees, Christmas trees. I don’t feel threatened. I don’t feel discriminated against. That’s what they are, Christmas trees.

“It doesn’t bother me a bit when people say, ‘Merry Christmas’ to me. I don’t think they are slighting me or getting ready to put me in a ghetto. In fact, I kind of like it. It shows that we are all brothers and sisters celebrating this happy time of year. It doesn’t bother me at all that there is a manger scene on display at a key intersection near my beach house in Malibu. If people want a nativity scene, it’s just as fine with me as is the Menorah a few hundred yards away.

“I don’t like getting pushed around for being a Jew, and I don’t think Christians like getting pushed around for being Christians. I think people who believe in God are sick and tired of getting pushed around, period. I have no idea where the concept came from, that America is an explicitly atheist country. I can’t find it in the Constitution and I don’t like it being shoved down my throat.

“Or maybe I can put it another way: where did the idea come from that we should worship celebrities and we aren’t allowed to worship God? I guess that’s a sign that I’m getting old, too. But there are a lot of us who are wondering where these celebrities came from and where the America we knew went to.

“In light of the many jokes we send to one another for a laugh, this is a little different: This is not intended to be a joke; it’s not funny, it’s intended to get you thinking.

“Billy Graham’s daughter was interviewed on the Early Show and Jane Clayson asked her ‘How could God let something like this happen?’ (regarding Hurricane Katrina). Anne Graham gave an extremely profound and insightful response. She said, ‘I believe God is deeply saddened by this, just as we are, but for years we’ve been telling God to get out of our schools, to get out of our government and to get out of our lives. And being the gentleman He is, I believe He has calmly backed out. How can we expect God to give us His blessing and His protection if we demand He leave us alone?’

“In light of recent events… terrorist attacks, school shootings, etc. I think it started when Madeleine Murray O’Hare (she was murdered, her body found a few years ago) complained she didn’t want prayer in our schools, and we said OK. Then someone said you better not read the Bible in school. The Bible says thou shalt not kill; thou shalt not steal, and love your neighbor as yourself. And we said OK.

“Then Dr. Benjamin Spock said we shouldn’t spank our children when they misbehave, because their little personalities would be warped and we might damage their self-esteem (Dr. Spock’s son committed suicide). We said an expert should know what he’s talking about. And we said okay.

“Now we’re asking ourselves why our children have no conscience, why they don’t know right from wrong, and why it doesn’t bother them to kill strangers, their classmates, and themselves.

“Probably, if we think about it long and hard enough, we can figure it out. I think it has a great deal to do with ‘WE REAP WHAT WE SOW.’

“Funny how simple it is for people to trash God and then wonder why the world’s going to hell.
Funny how we believe what the newspapers say, but question what the Bible says.

“Funny how you can send ‘jokes’ through e-mail and they spread like wildfire, but when you start sending messages regarding the Lord, people think twice about sharing.

“Funny how lewd, crude, vulgar and obscene articles pass freely through cyberspace, but public discussion of God is suppressed in the school and workplace.

“Are you laughing yet?

“Funny how when you forward this message, you will not send it to many on your address list because you’re not sure what they believe, or what they will think of you for sending it.

“Funny how we can be more worried about what other people think of us than what God thinks of us.

My Best Regards, Honestly and respectfully,

Ben Stein

Once upon a Saturday dreary

October 16, 2021

Here’s looking at you

One Saturday Night

One Saturday night

I lost my way,

And into the forest I chanced to stray,

And there in the woods

Were folks so wee

Their faces and features

I never did see,

They paid no heed,

For I stood quite still.

They went on dancing

With such a will,

With such abandon,

With such a will,

With such delight,

I skipped clear home

That Saturday night.

Every day holds the possibility of a miracle

My phone is once again running out of space, even though I delete photos just about every day – after I’ve transferred them to my computer. So, you will probably be seeing more posts throughout the day/week. At least for the time being, and if I can come up with something substantial to go with said photo. I just take too many photos, I guess.

Oh well, it is what it is!

Hope you have a great day!
