The Wreck of the Titan
by Morgan Robertson
Morgan was a writer from the United States and was fascinated by the idea of the world’s largest passenger ship sailing across the Atlantic on a doomed voyage.
In Morgan’s story, the Titan was said to be unsinkable.
In his story, the ship sank in the North Atlantic after striking an iceberg.
There also weren’t enough lifeboats on board.
Other similarities include:
The length of the Titan in his story was 800 feet, the Titanic was 882 feet.
The speed at which the Titan hit the iceberg was 25 knots. The Titanic was going 22.5 knots.
The Titan had 2,500 passengers. The Titanic had 2,200 passengers.
In Morgan’s story, the ocean liner was a British ship just as Titanic was.
Both ships hit the iceberg around midnight and both ships sank about 400 miles from Newfoundland.
Many thought Robertson was a prophet. He said he was just trying to write a good story based on his life experience as the son as veteran sailor.
Another writer, W.T. Stead published two stories also eerily similar to the Titanic disaster, “How the Mail Steamer Went Down in Mid Atlantic” in 1886 and “From the Old World to the New” in 1892.
In the first story, a sinking ocean liner doesn’t have enough lifeboats. In the second story, a ship is hit by an iceberg in the North Atlantic.
As if this wasn’t strange enough, Stead died on April 15, 1912 as a passenger on the Titanic.
These coincidences might not mean anything.
Or maybe Titanic was doomed before it even sailed. Cursed if you believe in that sort of thing.
Its demise written years before as a warning.
They always tell writers to write about what they are familiar with. Maybe that’s all this was.
Or maybe Titanic’s message has always been that hubris serves no one any good, especially against mother nature.

Futility, or the Wreck of the Titan is an 1898 novella written by Morgan Robertson. The story features the fictional ocean liner Titan, which sinks in the North Atlantic after striking an iceberg. The Titan and its sinking have been noted to be very similar to the real-life passenger ship RMS Titanic, which sank fourteen years later. Following the wreck, the novel was reissued with some changes, particularly in the ship’s gross tonnage. The first half of Futility introduces the hero John Rowland. Rowland is a disgraced former US Navy officer. Now an alcoholic fallen to the lowest levels of society, he’s been dismissed from the Navy and works as a deckhand on the Titan. One April night the ship hits an iceberg, sinking somewhat before the halfway point of the novel.
The second half follows Rowland. He saves the young daughter of a former lover by jumping onto the iceberg with her. The pair find a lifeboat washed up on the iceberg, and are eventually rescued by a passing ship. But the girl is recovered by her mother and Rowland is arrested for her kidnapping. A sympathetic magistrate discharges him and rebukes the mother for unsympathy to her daughter’s savior. Rowland disappears from the world. (Amazon)

“How the Mail Steamer Went Down in Mid Atlantic by a Survivor” is a short story that was published in the 22 March 1886, issue of the Pall Mall Gazette by the English investigative journalist and newspaper editor William Thomas Stead. Stead included this editorial comment: “This is exactly what might take place and will take place if liners are sent to sea short of boats”. Stead was later a First Class passenger on the RMS Titanic, a British ocean liner which collided with an iceberg at the time of her maiden voyage on 14 April 1912, and he was one of approximately 1,500 people who perished in the disaster. Many people believe that this story foreshadows the Titanic tragedy based on its plot and the themes present. (wikipedia)

This title was misread as ‘Jasher’, and at some point Jasher was treated as a proper name; however, the pronoun ‘the’ (Hebrew ‘ha’) never preceeds proper names. There is also another spurious Book of Jasher, published 1750, in which Jasher is treated as the name of the author.

20 And king Nimrod reigned securely, and all the earth was under his control,
and all the earth was of one tongue and words of union.
21 And all the princes of Nimrod and his great men took counsel together; Phut, Mitzraim,

Come let us build ourselves a city and in it a strong tower, and its top reaching heaven,
