fed up, but not giving up

I’m really getting fed up with this refrigerator!

We started having trouble with it back in August. The refrigerator compartment was too warm! The freezer part was fine, but cold air wasn’t getting to the fridge.

The motor was freezing up – for some reason. At first, I thought someone was leaving one of the doors ajar. But after getting it running again and reading the trouble shooting section of the owners’ manual, it stated that heat and humidity could cause the refrigerator to malfunction. So the fridge could malfunction if any of the doors are left open too long, or it gets too hot and humid.

When I first noticed that the refrigerator was malfunctioning during the heat of the summer, I took a hair dryer to the back of the freezer, dethawing the ice and hoping that would work. At least temporarily! I really didn’t feel like lugging everything downstairs to the fridge/freezers in the basement. Of course, I would if need be. And I did.

It was really hot and humid at the time. Hotter and more humid than “normal”. Luckily, we have an extra fridge – usually used for extra milk and stuff. We left the fridge unplugged for about two weeks. Maybe longer…once the heat spell was over, we plugged it back in.

Everything was fine for a while. But we had to unplug it again and dethaw/reset it again in October…I think.

By that time, we had acquired another small fridge. My housemate’s son gave us one he didn’t need anymore. So, now we have two small refrigerators and two freezers. The new fridge is left unplugged until we need it. But, I sure am glad we have it.

So, when we unplugged it this time, we took one of the panels off the back and dusted the coils and other parts. There was water in the collection tray at the bottom, so we got that emptied as well.

How old do you think this fridge is? It’s old!! We got it from my grandparents many years ago. I know the Smithsonian would pay me a pretty penny for it…but I’m not getting rid of it. I know it’s an energy hog, but it works, and that matters a lot today.

I know the freezer compartment needs to be defrosted. I will be doing that soon. When I defrost it, I will get the numbers off the back so I can find information on it.

The thing about this new fridge is that it’s practically brand new. In August it will be four years old, I think. There’s really nothing wrong with it, just if you don’t have air conditioning…it sucks!

I know it’s hard to see, but that is an old ice chest. It came off a caboose (train car).

The last two times my new fridge malfunctioned I said I was going to buy a block of dry ice and put it in the ice chest. That would be more reliable than dealing with this new refrigerator.

The ice chest has a drain in the bottom to let any water drain out, which is why I have a tub underneath it. I’m not using it for anything at the moment, I just have the tub there so if I do end up needing it, I know I have it.

Typically, dry ice evaporates
and doesn’t melt so the drain
would be for melting ice
or any condensation.

So far, fingers crossed, everything seems to be running the way it should. Hopefully, we won’t have any issues with it until the dog days of summer.

When it comes time to replace it – which won’t be too long, maybe a couple of years, I have a feeling – I am getting a standard, run of the mill refrigerator. No ice maker, no water, just plain and simple…like they used to be.

hope you have a great day!
thanks for stopping by!!
